KXCI and Sun Sounds on Access Tucson’s SAP Channels
Posted January 19th, 2007 by vikkid in Front Page, News, What's on TVAccess Tucson announces an exciting new partnership with KXCI 91.3 Community Radio and Sun Sounds of Arizona Radio. Now you can hear Sun Sounds of Arizona Radio on channel 72 Comcast / 97 Cox and KXCI 91.3FM Community Radio on 74 Comcast / 99 Cox using the SAP (Second Audio Program) feature.
The SAP feature allows a TV station to broadcast another audio channel to the viewer. For example, you can watch a program produced in one language (i.e. English version) but activate the SAP and that same program could also be watch in another language (i.e. Spanish version). Some stations may also use their SAP feature to broadcast weather information or Descriptive Video Services (DVS) for the visually impaired.
In our case, Access Tucson is using one SAP channel to increase the audience for KXCI 91.3FM Community Radio, especially those listeners whose reception is blocked by the mountains. Another Access Tucson SAP channel is being used to broadcast Sun Sounds of Arizona, a non-profit organization which provides audio access to people in the Southwest who cannot read print because they have a disability.
For viewers with a digital box, you can access SAP by pressing the “settings” button on your digital remote. You will see the “quick settings” screen. Select the “choose SAP language option. Use the left or right arrow buttons to select the “Spanish” setting.
For viewers without a digital box, you may need to refer to your TV and/or VCR/DVR owner’s manuals to access SAP. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
The SAP feature is only on television sets that are stereo. Even if you have a newer model TV, SAP will not be available if your set has mono sound.
If you are watching television using your VCR/DVR as a receiver, then use the remote control for the VCR/DVR to select SAP. Alternatively, if you are not using a VCR/DVR, but viewing the TV directly via cable, just use the remote control that came with your TV.
Some remote controllers have a button on them labeled “MTS”, “SAP”, or “Audio Select”. Try pressing this button in succession to cycle through the various audio modes.
If there is no button on the remote control, press the “MENU” button to bring up your television’s on-screen menu and look for options like “Setup”, “Audio Setup”, or “Audio” to find the selections available for MTS, or SAP.
If you don’t have your remote control or your owner’s manual, contact the store where you purchased your television. Many times they can help with obtaining another operation manual or finding a universal remote control that will work with your television.
