Access Tucson 2.0
Access Tucson is very pleased to begin the initial steps in moving your access center into the 2.0, web-centric, blog, vlog, stream sphere. In other words, how can a community media center take advantage of the current web tools to make our mission more effective? On Monday October 15th, 2007, Access Tucson hosted Community Media 2.0 with Kari Peterson, an in-depth overview of what all of this means. There were over 40 people in attendance and response to the questionnaire was impressive. People are interested in this. That’s where this starts—some common understanding and language about these relatively new tools and possibilities and what the interest and uses would be for the Access Tucson membership.
Admittedly, many are way ahead of us—any 14 year old, let’s say, or some of the other community centers around the country. Media centers across the country are incorporating this new approach at varying levels in truly interesting and valuable ways. Denver Open Media is an extreme example of what is possible and what DOM thought was necessary for their community. After losing their funding, Denver turned to the web as a means of collecting and distributing content for their channels.
Cambridge Community Television is creating a local voice through their Media Mapping project. Visit the website and find a Google map of their community with red push pins representing video content and programming. Click on a pin and you may find a Zip Doc (zip code based documentary) about the history of a particular bridge and a tango dancing event held there. This creates a truly vibrant, accessible view of Cambridge and illustrates that being web centric does not mean abandoning your local identity. In fact, it’s just the opposite.
Access Tucson (that means you!) will define what is right for our community—what makes sense and serves the community voice that we all work to preserve and make heard. To add your voice to this process, please complete the Community Media 2.0 questionnaire and return it to Access Tucson. We are just beginning to define this territory and your input is valuable.
