This marks the 13th year for Access Tucson’s Summer Session. Since 1995, kids have taken over the facility each summer to learn television production in the studio and in the field to create very entertaining media. Along the way, whether they knew it or not, they were improving their communication skills, working in team-based production groups and learning how TV is constructed. These kids will never watch television the same way again…

They know it’s pretty easy to chroma-key pirates onto a clipper ship without ever leaving the building. They know how sound effects make a bank heist shoot-out seem believable. And they know you can’t live without slo-mo in a tragic scene. These kids are hip to the world of media magic—they know the weather guy’s tricks. Hopefully, they’ll see their favorite television shows and films in a new and wiser way.

Studio Production instructor Larry Foster and Digital Field Production instructor Tim O’Grady led youth through the process of creating media. Long-time volunteer and Utterback Middle School media teacher, Bonnie Dickason and Access Tucson’s Ivy Roberts assisted in this journey.

An exciting addition to this year’s camp was the screening of the Summer Session productions at The Loft Cinema. Students were able to see their work on the big screen as part of the 2008 Tucson International Children’s Film Festival presented by the Glassman Foundation and sponsored by Target. Work from Access Tucson Summer Session, Tucson Museum of Art and the Pima County Library was featured at the screening.
