At this time, the Grants and Scholarships committee of the Access Tucson Board of Directors has decided to suspend the Scholarships Program. This comes as as result of the very serious budget issues that Access Tucson faces at this time.

Applications may still be submitted for classes that may have unfilled seats. Awards will be made on a first come, first serve, stand-by basis and require service hours in exchange for the award.

The Grants and Scholarships Committee and the staff of Access Tucson truly regret the suspension of the Scholarships Program. The vibrancy and diversity of our organization comes directly from our membership and the programming they produce. We hope that the suspension of this program will be brief.

Kids shoot video. See what they shot premiering July 26.

ENCORE PRESENTATIONS
Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays Aug 4 through Aug 22
8pm on channel 74 Comcast / 99 Cox

This marks the 13th year for Access Tucson’s Summer Session. Since 1995, kids have taken over the facility each summer to learn television production in the studio and in the field to create very entertaining media. Along the way, whether they knew it or not, they were improving their communication skills, working in team-based production groups and learning how TV is constructed. These kids will never watch television the same way again…

They know it’s pretty easy to chroma-key pirates onto a clipper ship without ever leaving the building. They know how sound effects make a bank heist shoot-out seem believable. And they know you can’t live without slo-mo in a tragic scene. These kids are hip to the world of media magic—they know the weather guy’s tricks. Hopefully, they’ll see their favorite television shows and films in a new and wiser way.

Studio Production instructor Larry Foster and Digital Field Production instructor Tim O’Grady led youth through the process of creating media. Long-time volunteer and Utterback Middle School media teacher, Bonnie Dickason and Access Tucson’s Ivy Roberts assisted in this journey.

An exciting addition to this year’s camp was the screening of the Summer Session productions at The Loft Cinema. Students were able to see their work on the big screen as part of the 2008 Tucson International Children’s Film Festival presented by the Glassman Foundation and sponsored by Target. Work from Access Tucson Summer Session, Tucson Museum of Art and the Pima County Library was featured at the screening.

Be sure to watch Summer Session 2008 on Access Tucson.

Premiere weekend:
Saturday, July 26 at 6pm and 9pm
Sunday, July 27 at 8pm and 11pm
Channels 74 on Comcast and 99 on Cox.

Access Tucson offers advanced training in Final Cut Pro, Apple’s high-end non-linear video editing program. FCP is a standard for many broadcast, educational and independent media producers. Access Tucson uses both Final Cut Express and Pro—Express is the foundation for Pro and is part of the Digital Field Production training. FCE is prerequisite for FCP. Both are amazing tools for the post production process.

Lauren Johnson has spent quite a few hours in the FCP suite upstairs to create Talk Tools, soon to be airing on the Access Tucson channels.

Talk Tools is an instructional, demonstrative video that provides oral motor therapy techniques to strengthen the muscles of the jaw for improving speech clarity. This program was developed by Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson (Lauren’s mother) to help parents and therapists who have children and clients who have impaired speech.

Lauren has a background in broadcast journalism and identified Access Tucson as having the resources she needed and took advantage of “the awesome opportunity.” After taking the Digital Field Production, Studio Production and Final Cut Pro classes, she had everything she needed to create a professional production.

Lauren Johnson Talk Tools Producer

“You get to talk to people who really know this stuff, ask questions and apply it to what you need personally. The Multi-Cam feature is the coolest aspect of using Final Cut Pro and was just what I needed for this production.”

Access Tucson staff member, Eric Peery, spends a lot of time in the Media Lab and the Final Cut Pro Suites. Eric has received Apple FCP end user certification.

Access Tucson staff member Eric Peery

“Whatever you can imagine—you can do.” Peery simply states. “You can manipulate 1 frame of video that corresponds to 100 “frames” of audio. I once spent 3 days building a 4 second effect.” It was an effect for a slasher film clip as part of his Celluloid Fever movie review program. “It was so much fun!” But then, that’s Eric.

Lauren adds, “It is a free service, but you are treated like a part of the production staff—everyone says ‘Hi’ to me when I come in.” The hardest parts? Hypothermia for one–Access Tucson’s edit suites are cool places to be anytime of the year—and “learning all the short cuts and trying to create a really good product.”

In TALK camp, children and young adults are trained twice weekly in the use of appropriate Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to assist in speech communications. UA Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences graduate students, together with a UA clinical instructor of speech-language pathology and speech aides, help AAC users practice their skills.

Participants included clients Jonathan, Jonathan, Fred, Zach, and James and graduate clinicians Margaret DeFresne, Jennifer Parrott, Kristin Nelson, Lauren Staniunas and Riah Ellis from the University of Arizona Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.

On the tour, participants created two short studio programs using chroma-key backgrounds they designed, worked in the control room to direct the shots, insert graphics and select music for the productions. They also got to meet Tucson Police Department Traffic officers who stopped by from their TucsonVision production next door in Studio B.

The vending machines are empty, a stuffed monkey skateboards through the lobby, zombies have taken over Studio B, and there are snakes in the control room, kids trapped behind the cyclorama and a slow-motion fight scene rages at the front desk. All is well after another exciting summer of youth production at Access Tucson.

This marks the 12th year for Access Tucson’s Summer Session. Since 1995, kids have taken over the facility each summer to learn television production in the studio and in the field to create some incredibly entertaining media.

Access Tucson interns Donvan Doyle, Bonnie Dickason and Ashley Lewelling helped keep cameras rolling, create zombies and capture these behind-the-scene images.

Just 20 miles south of Tucson, Edge High School Sahuarita has operated for over ten years at the Sahuarita Park. Instructor, Darryl Cornell was interested in creating an activity that would engage students in learning. He had attended classes at Access Tucson and thought that video production could help students with writing and computer skills.

Through the support of Edge High School, the students were able to take the Digital Field Production class. They utilizeded the school’s computer facilities in combination with the Access Tucson production equipment and Media Lab to create their productions.

“The students really liked Larry (Larry Foster, Access Tucson Production Specialist and Instructor) and he did a great job motivating them and keeping them focused. They really got a good sense of the amount of work that goes into even such short films”, Cornell said.

Here’s what students had to say about the process of learning how to make TV:

John Huddleston:
I’m glad that I learned how to use the cameras and the computer editing program. The editing program was more to my interest since that’s really what you need to put a whole film together and have it make sense. Thanks for coming to our school and taking your time to let us use your equipment and also teaching us the best ways to make our video look good.

Philip Cervenka:
I had no idea that making a film involved so much preparation. When you watch a film with a lot of special effects you know that it must take a long time to make, but we started with a very simple idea and it was still quite a bit of work. I especially liked seeing how the editing software could make a story out of all the short bits of film we shot. I see things in movies now that I never thought of before.

Christina Catalan:
I enjoyed learning about the camera and filming the scenes most of all. The idea of writing everything down before filming did not make sense to me until we actually started filming. We made mistakes and with that came some embarrassment. In the end, it was more work than I ever would have thought and I don’t see myself ever really learning the editing part. I just don’t have the patience I don’t think.

Violetta Solorzano:
It was very interesting. I agree with Christina in that my patience may not allow me to ever be any good at this. I liked working with my friends though and I think that Larry did a great job helping us through this. By the time we were through I didn’t want to see the film anymore!

Roman Rascon:
We need more classes like this! It is really nice to have something at the end of the project that you can watch and show others. I liked the filming the most. Access has some really decent equipment and I hope to learn enough to one day be able to do this on my own. If I learn to do it myself I will be able to make a film without worrying about school rules!!!

Thank you so much for providing instruction in our Media Arts class over the past two months. The students here in Sahuarita really looked forward to the lessons and gained a great understanding of what it takes to produce an entertaining film. Some were more inclined to show interest in the camera and sound aspect of filmmaking while others felt more drawn to the computer and editing. Overall the experience was very enlightening for all involved and one which we hope will broaden our students’ interest in filmmaking and in the programs that Access Tucson has to offer.

Thanks again,
Darryl Cornell, Instructor, Edge High School Sahuarita

Youth have always been a priority for Access Tucson in serving the community. Media is such an influential part of our lives, but often has an even a greater impact on children. The youth audience for commercial television is the largest, targeted demographic in marketing. Young people often are not even aware of the messages and tactics used to capture their attention and ultimately, their dollars and brand loyalty.

Youth that participate in any activity in our facility come away with a new perspective and understanding of television and media. Through creating their own messages, children are no longer simple consumers of television, but programmers. This experience enables them to better understand the many media messages they see.

Through use of the Access Tucson channels and facilities, youth create a voice for themselves and their peers, sharing their own interests and stories in their own words. Unlike many youth programs, Access Tucson remains a resource for them beyond their initial experience. We are a community resource and many youth program participants continue to remain involved in making media at Access Tucson.

Access Tucson has a summer program that offers kids a chance to explore the world of television production. From scripting and shooting, to performing as talent on the set, Summer Session participants learn to create their own television programs.

Media is certainly a part of our lives and our children’s lives. The Access Tucson Summer Session gives kids a new perspective and understanding of television and media. Through creating their own messages, children are no longer simple consumers of television, but programmers. This experience enables them to better understand all the media messages they see daily and have a fun time learning!

Your action is needed today to prevent Cox Communications from using their influence with the Arizona State Legislature to END PUBLIC ACCESS IN TUCSON by JUNE 30!

Dear Supporter of Public Access Cable Television in Tucson:

Your action is needed today to prevent Cox Communications from using their influence with the Arizona State Legislature from circumventing the cable television license renewal negotiating process with the City of Tucson to make an end run to END PUBLIC ACCESS IN TUCSON by JUNE 30! I am not crying wolf – I have spent much of the last two weeks in Phoenix and have seen for myself the incredible access and power of the small army of Cox staffers, lawyers and lobbyists. It is OUTRAGEOUS and MUST BE STOPPED!

Cox got their way last year getting a law passed that severely crippled the City’s position to negotiate a license renewal in the community’s best interest. Now they are going further! They are pulling out all stops to bring the City and our community to its knees!

This new law would reward Cox for walking away from the negotiating table altogether! The end result would be that Tucson would no longer have 9 public, educational and government channels on the Cox system, it would have a maximum of 4 – and three of them would be government channels.
This would leave only one channel for the public and education to share.

Cox has also used its database of 100,000 customers in Tucson to successfully encourage hundreds to click a button on their website to send emails to the City Council and Legislature. Your elected officials need to hear from YOU and it needs to be done TODAY!

Please take just a few minutes of your time to let the State House members know that YOU OPPOSE HB 2069 the strike everything Cable TV bill.

Tell them that you don’t think the State should interfere with the negotiations between Cox and the City of Tucson.

Tell them why the PEG channels are important to you.

I’m sure the lawmakers would rather hear what you have to say in your own words rather than getting hundreds of identical emails generated by Cox. They may vote on this bill as early as TOMORROW!

Mark your calendar. Access Tucson will be closed from Sunday, December 24th, 2006 through January 1st, 2007. Our regular service schedule resumes on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007.

Producers need to determine what shows/tapes they want to run during the closure and turn in a cablecast calendar at the front desk. If a producer doesn’t submit a cablecast calendar, Access Tucson will play the most recent show that’s been turned in.

Closure dates for all of 2006 and 2007 are also available.
